Alcohol Use
When you plan your summer fun, do you stock
your cooler with cold beer? You could be asking for trouble.
Alcohol actually makes you feel warmer and interferes with the
body’s heat regulating process. It also drives body-cooling
water out of your system. If you’re going to drink alcohol, be
sure to drink plenty of water, too. You’ll handle the heat
better.
Drinking alcohol can make driving, biking or piloting a
watercraft downright dangerous. According to the U.S. Coast
Guard, boaters with a .10 blood-alcohol concentration are 10
times more likely to die in boating accidents than those who
don’t drink. Sunshine, glare, wind, noise and motion on the
water intensify alcohol’s effects—it’s more dangerous to drink
and boat than to drink and drive.
