It’s summer and more of us are grilling out and
packing picnics. The trouble is, when you take time off to enjoy
that picnic, salmonella and other food-borne critters are
working overtime to make you sick. A recent survey found that
nearly three out of four households seriously violate basic food
safety precautions. And that could mean food poisoning.
For a safe cookout or picnic, follow these guidelines.
• Wash your hands.
• Wash your fruits and veggies.
• Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold.
• And, separate raw and cooked foods.
Don’t put cooked foods on a platter that held raw foods. Use
a disinfectant to wash surfaces and utensils used for raw foods
before using them again. And, wrap raw meats and separate them
from other items in the cooler.
