 Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is a serious illness that can
result in long-lasting muscle pain, arthritis, neurological
disorders, fatigue and depression as well as heart, respiratory
and digestive problems .
You can beat Lyme disease with a little know-how. First, know
how to remove a tick. Using tweezers, grasp it—don’t squeeze--
and carefully pull it straight out.
Second, recognize the rash. A few days or weeks after the bite,
a red, bull’s-eye ring sometimes appears. You may also
experience flu-like symptoms: headache, sore throat, stiff neck,
fever, muscle aches and fatigue. Seek prompt medical attention
if you have any of these symptoms, especially if a tick bit you
or you were in place where Lyme disease is common.
Third, know how to treat Lyme disease. Prompt antibiotic therapy
makes recovery more likely and can reduce future problems.
Last, know how to prevent ticks from biting. Wear light colored
clothing so you can spot them. Tuck your pant legs into your
socks and your shirt into your pants. Use an insect repellant.
Take a shower, then check for ticks. They’re favorite spots are
the head, behind the ears and knees, the groin, navel and
armpits. Wash or dry your clothes for 30 minutes to kill any
ticks.
